Motivation

Well, I've been trying to go to the gym every day and work out. I've been trying to eat healthier.

I need some motivation, though. It is so weird. I have this goal (lose weight), I know how to achieve it (exercise, smarter eating), and I even enjoy what it takes to reach the goal (going to the gym). Yet, I don't do it. When my alarm goes off, I talk myself out of getting up. Who in their right mind gets up at 4:30 in the freaking morning to go exercise? That is just crazy.

But then I'm disappointed in myself for not getting up. We usually go to the Y in the afternoon with the kids and I can workout then, but I really want to do it in the morning.

What makes some people just do it? Where do I get the motivation to be one of thoese people? I was at Borders last night looking for a book to help motivate me. All I could find was "diet books" or "exercise books." That's not what I want. Someone should write a book. I would love to be the one to do it because I'd love the money, but then that would take motivation!

The only way I exercise in the morning is if I sleep in something 'suitable' for exercise (and for being seen outside in) and literally fall into my joggers when the alarm goes off and then leave. That way I am already out and exercising before I wake up.

I have a friend who likes to swim in the morning - she sleeps in her swimwear to remind her to exercise when she wakes up. Her theory is that it is easier to just go swim rather than take of the swimmers and make more excuses!

All that being said, I am currently experiencing your dilemma - I know what I want, and how to get it, I just can't be bothered getting it! Good luck, let me know what works.

I really like that idea! I don't think it'd be comfortable to sleep in my jog-bra, though. I might try it.

I had two alarms set this morning-one in the den and one in my bedroom. I still didn't get up...other than to turn off the alarms of course!!

You have to be a serious morning person to get up and work out in the morning.. I'm not that guy..

I work out after work and on the weekends. In my experience motivation comes the most freely once you start seeing results.. You start looking forward to it..

I used to work out every morning. I've since become an after-work workout person. I don't know, though: I definitely miss the morning workouts.

As Chris said, I think the motivation is easy once you're seeing results. For me, the most striking results were how clear my thinking was when I worked out in the morning. I almost felt like I had an unfair advantage over a lot of my coworkers who were struggling to form coherent thoughts over their first cup of coffee.

I'm sure you're familiar with that old saw about taking three weeks to form a habit. Well, I've always figured you only need motivation for the first three weeks. Every time I've slipped out of the habit of working out regularly, I focus on how I'm going to get myself to the gym for the next three weeks. 10 times out of 10, it doesn't even take 2 weeks before I'm looking forward to the next workout.

I posted a few tips over at Music City Bloggers, but here's a bonus one that may or may not work for you: think about that post-workout shower. There is nothing quite so reviving and decadent as a cool/steamy (your preference) shower with scented body wash or whatever after a hard, sweaty workout. There have been times when I've gone to work out just to experience the relief of that shower. It's a totally sensual, delicious experience.

I hope there's at least something there that's helpful! Good luck.

I love the idea of working out before work too-I've done it once, and I did feel a lot better the whole day.

I'm going to think of the shower, Kate. I think that might help.

It isn't the actual workout portion I need motivation for, though. It is the getting out of bed portion!!

I cannot, I repeat, I cannot get up to exercise in the morning, so i've tried to make it part of my commute, if I can, i cycle to/from work. I don't really take time out of my day then.

I don't know if that is possible for you, but it's working for me.
