Why Does it Have to Be So Hard?

I don't understand why I can't just make myself get up early! There are many benefits to being an early-riser. I am just incapable of reaping the benefits because I CAN'T WAKE UP.

Last night, I set my alarm for 6am. I wrote out a list of what I wanted to do in the morning before work. I wrote the list because the previous morning, as I hit the snooze, I told myself I was crazy and had no reason to get up early. This time, no excuse-I have a list.
At 4:30 when I got up to give Keira a bottle, I told myself to reset the alarm for 6:30 because I had trouble falling asleep due to allergies and I needed my rest. So, as long as I didn't hit snooze, I could get up at 6:30.
At 6:30, I reset the alarm to 7:15. As I was resetting the alarm, I went over my list, deemed it dumb, called myself weak, and slipped back into bed.

I couldn't talk myself into getting up. I thought of Rachael Ray, my hero, and how she says she sleeps less than 4 hours a night. I thought of how much happier I'd be if I got my pilates in; I considered the nice quiet time I'd have with nobody else awake in the house-a rarity. I even thought of Rory Gilmore and how productive she is when she wakes up before her boyfriend in season six, which I was watching as I tried to fall asleep. (I love Gilmore Girls) I need help. Someone teach me how to make myself wake up early!!

I totally aggree with you and it's something I've been trying to work out how to do for years. I arrive at work just on time most mornings, which means if anything screws up my journey, I'm late. I know that if I don't need to iron I can sleep an extra 10 minutes, if I don't wash my hair, 15 minutes, which means that I can get away with snoozing from 6.50 to 7.15. Stupid thing is, once I'm out of bed I'm fine, it's just dragging my ass out. I too would love to do yoga/pilates in the morning before work and hell knows I need to work on my bingo wings before I get married in a strapless dress, but all of that is irrelevant in the morning.

Mr Fiance on the other hand is the total opposite! He swears by just getting straight out of bed, don't give yourself time to think, then splash your face with cold water. You could try that...

Meanwhile, after being late for work this morning, I'm heading to bed with the best intentions of getting up early and leaving the house with plenty of time to spare. No snooze button!!

Oh my goodness. You lived in Australia. You're now in Nashville. You're almost 30. How have I never been here before?? We're practically the same person... except not really.

Is that a monkey-child you have there? :)

Please go directly to Meridees and get one of those delightful pastry things with cherries and some sort of icing and crumbly oat-type-thingies on top. Mmmm. I CRAVE them!

The reason you're having difficulty getting up is likely because you are not getting what we call "restorative" sleep (meaning you might not be sleeping the full amount you need, OR when you do it's not quality/restful sleep). Whatever you do, keep your wake time consistent *every* day, even holidays and weekends. Also, try going to bed earlier to see exactly how many hours of sleep you need. It's different for everyone. I'm 24 and I still need 9. I sleep in three hour cycles, and it's very hard for me to wake up in the middle of a cycle. For example, I can more easily wake up after 3 hours, 6 hours, or 9 hours rather than, say, 7 hours. If you have insomnia or other sleep problems, I have tips for that, too. Oh, the joys of health psychology! ;)
